What Is a Breast Lift with Implants?
(Mastopexy with Breast Augmentation)
A breast lift with implants (also called an “augmentation-mastopexy”) is a plastic surgery procedure designed to elevate/reshape sagging breasts, enhance breast fullness, reposition drooping nipples, and improve breast symmetry.
Over time, gravity and loss of natural skin elasticity can affect the appearance of a woman’s breasts. These factors, combined with pregnancies and nursing, can often cause the breasts to lose volume as well as their youthful shape and firmness. To address these concerns, a customized mastopexy can eliminate excess skin and reposition the nipples, while the placement of breast implants below the chest muscle (breast augmentation) can restore and/or further enlarge breast volume.
What Are the Benefits of a Breast Lift with Implants?
When an augmentation-mastopexy is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, it can produce benefits such as:
- Reduction of breast ptosis (sag)
- Enhanced breast shape and volume
- Improved symmetry in the breasts
- Excision of excess skin
- A firmer bustline
- Repositioning of nipples
- A more youthful, proportionate physique
- Long-lasting results
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift with Implants?
Many women wonder if a breast lift, breast augmentation, or a combined breast lift with implants is the right procedure for achieving the rejuvenated breasts they desire. During a consultation with Dr. Joseph DiBello, he can analyze the appearance of the breasts, review your medical history, and determine the most suitable approach for achieving an optimal outcome.
Replacing a degree of diminished volume and restoring upper breast fullness can typically be accomplished with the placement of breast implants during a breast augmentation. After surgery, breasts appear “fuller” and more shapely in contour; however, this procedure alone cannot address excess stretched breast skin or certain aesthetic nipple concerns.
If the position of the nipples has dropped too much, in addition to loss of volume, then breast lift techniques may be recommended along with the augmentation. A breast lift, or mastopexy, focuses on raising and reshaping sagging breasts. While the mastopexy procedure can result in some increase in upper breast fullness, significant enhancement or improvement in fullness can only be achieved by placing implants at the time of the mastopexy procedure.
Due to medical precautions or your own personal wishes, Dr. DiBello may recommend that the procedures be staged instead of combining them into one surgery. The breast lift surgery will generally be performed first. After you have recovered and the time is right, you can proceed with the breast augmentation surgery at a later time. You can trust Dr. DiBello to consider all of your concerns, medical needs, and cosmetic goals in designing your highly personalized augmentation-mastopexy surgery.
Combining a Breast Lift with Implants with Other Surgeries
Augmentation-mastopexy can be combined with additional procedures in many cases. For instance, if the patient wishes to improve their body contours along with the appearance of their bustline, they may consider tummy tuck surgery or another body procedure; when performed together, aesthetic breast and body surgeries are sometimes known as a mommy makeover.
If you so desire, Dr. DiBello may also be able to incorporate a facial contouring procedure – such as facelift or eyelid surgery – into your treatment. No matter your particular needs and goals, Dr. DiBello can help you put together a customized plan during your initial consultation.
What Does the Augmentation-Mastopexy Procedure Involve?
A consultation with Dr. DiBello can help you determine if you are a candidate for a breast lift with implants. During this process, he will also develop a highly personalized approach to your surgery that incorporates several important considerations involved in augmentation-mastopexy. Although each surgery is unique to the patient, we have included a general description of the techniques and steps that may be taken during breast lift surgery with implants. The procedure, whether performed during a single operation or in two phases, is typically done under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis.
The mastopexy portion of the procedure focuses on improving the appearance of the breasts in several ways. During the lift, the breast tissue is elevated by removing excess skin from the lower portion of the breast and reshaping/tightening the remaining breast skin. At the same time, the nipple and areola (the pigmented skin surrounding your nipple) are repositioned to the esthetically desired higher position. The size of the areola can also be reduced if a significant amount of stretching has occurred. During the combined or staged mastopexy augmentation procedure, Dr. DiBello places the breast implant through the mastopexy incisions and therefore does not have to make any additional incisions for the augmentation portion.

What Is Recovery After Breast Lift with Implants Like?
Just as each surgery is unique, so is each individual’s recovery process. Following surgery, patients can experience swelling, soreness, and bruising; however, cold compresses, prescribed pain medication, and elevating the upper body can help relieve discomfort. Dr. DiBello recommends getting as much rest as possible during your recovery in order to help the body heal. Closely following all post-surgical care instructions and attending all post-op appointments can help ease the recovery process and deliver the most optimal outcome.
Most patients are able to return to work after 7 to 10 days, though this estimate can vary based on the specific details of the surgery. While visible scarring is an expected consequence of any breast lift with augmentation surgery, scars typically fade quite significantly over time with proper care. To minimize the visibility of scar tissue, it is important to keep incision dressings clean, take antibiotic medications as prescribed, keep incisions/scars out of the sun, and maintain a healthy diet. If at any point during the recovery process you have questions or concerns, you are encouraged to contact Dr. DiBello as soon as possible. Dr. DiBello takes maximum precautions to reduce risks and limit the possibility of complications from this procedure. However, if a complication arises and is identified early, the likelihood of a successful resolution is significantly increased.
Are Any Risks Associated with Augmentation-Mastopexy?
Augmentation-mastopexy is among the most popular breast enhancement surgeries performed around the world. As such, complications are quite rare; however, as is the case with any plastic surgery, your chances of a safe, successful treatment are much higher when you entrust your care to a qualified provider.
Rest assured that Dr. DiBello, who has been in practice for over 30 years, prioritizes the well-being of every patient with whom he works. When performing a breast lift with implants, he only uses FDA-approved saline or silicone implants and employs proven, trusted surgical techniques.
How Will My Scars Look After My Breast Lift with Implants?
Some degree of scarring is inevitable after a breast lift with implants, but Dr. DiBello always strives to place incisions in the most inconspicuous locations possible. Additionally, he will provide you with personalized post-operative instructions to care for your scars and help them heal properly.
Are There Any Alternatives to a Breast Lift with Implants?
While most patients marvel at the many benefits of a breast lift with implants, there are a number of other procedures which can produce similar effects (if on a smaller scale). For instance, patients uninterested in breast implants may wish to combine mastopexy with fat transfer for a natural breast augmentation. In this innovative treatment, fat is harvested from another area of the body, such as the thighs or buttocks, using liposuction. The removed fat is then purified and injected into the breasts to add fullness and volume. Alternatively, some patients may be better qualified for another breast enhancement surgery, such as a breast reduction. Known medically as a reduction mammaplasty, a breast reduction aims to make the breasts smaller for functional and/or cosmetic reasons.
How Much Does Breast Lift With Implants Cost?
At our practice, the average price for a breast lift with implants is approximately $12,300 (silicone gel implants would be about $1,200 more). This estimate is based on an outpatient, combined augmentation mastopexy procedure and includes the cost of saline implants, Dr. DiBello’s fee, and hospital fees (for the operating room, anesthesia, and testing). There are many considerations that can affect the total cost of this procedure, which makes it necessary to meet with Dr. DiBello for a consultation to receive an accurate personal estimate. Dr. DiBello will perform a thorough evaluation and develop a custom surgical plan during your consultation. Calculating your cost quote will depend on several aspects of your surgical plan including:
- Breast implant costs (based on the type and size of implant chosen)
- The breast lift technique(s) proposed
- The complexity of the procedure and the desired degree of aesthetic enhancement
- Any aesthetic changes to the nipples/areolae
- Whether the procedure is performed during one operation or in phases
After your consultation, you will have the opportunity to review your cost quote with a knowledgeable member of our friendly office team. Feel free to ask any questions you may have about pricing, payment options, surgery scheduling, and more. Our goal is always to help you feel comfortable and confident about your plastic surgery decisions!
Additional Breast Lift with Implants FAQs
Is augmentation-mastopexy painful?
Augmentation-mastopexy is not generally considered painful, as anesthesia will be administered throughout the procedure. Following the surgery, you may experience a certain degree of swelling, bruising, and soreness; however, these are typically mild and can be treated with over-the-counter medications.
Will a breast lift with implants interfere with breastfeeding?
While an augmentation-mastopexy may not interfere with your ability to breastfeed, there is no universally accepted answer for this question, and cases can vary. It is important to understand that some women are naturally unable to breastfeed in the first place. While the nipple remains connected to the milk ducts during a mastopexy procedure and the ability to breastfeed should be preserved, there are no guarantees. Since Dr. DiBello only places the implants behind the muscle, there should also be no impact on the ability to breastfeed from this part of the procedure as well, but in general, he recommends you ideally wait until you are no longer planning pregnancies in order to preserve the results of your surgery.
